The Blue Lagoon is a mirror of a water source located in the crater of a dormant volcano in the volcanic region of Pali Aike, near the Strait of Magellan. It is located in the department of Güer Aike, in the province of Santa Cruz, 62 km south of the city of Rio Gallegos. Its last eruptions would have occurred less than 10,000 years ago.
The lagoon reaches a depth of 295 m, and is 560 m in diameter, its name derives from its intense coloration, due to the absence of suspended materials. Its main crater (which is the one that contains the lagoon) is formed by very steep slopes and basaltic cliffs.
The Blue Lagoon and its surroundings were declared by the province of Santa Cruz "provincial geological reserve". This reserve covers an area of 60 hectares. The regulation of the protected area is not yet clearly defined.
