Around 1850, settlers from Ocaña began to arrive in this mountainous and wild region, attracted by the ambition and beauty of the landscape. Hunting and fishing were his breath. Encouraged by the first colonizers, among whom stood out, Antonio García, the Ballesteros and the Rolón. More were arriving, coming from Salazar de las Palmas and other neighboring centers.

On November 27, 1815, Gregorio Montes, founded the hamlet of Calderos, erected as a district of Salazar in 1860.

The Legislative Assembly of the sovereign State of Santander created the Galindo District, on October 7, 1864, in memory of General Galindo, killed in combat at ´´La Piedra de los Dieses´´. On January 1, 1865, the owned municipality or district began to function.

Its first mayor was Abelardo Maldarriaga.

On January 7, 1866, the parish of San Rafael de Gramalote was formed, created by episcopal decree of the Bishop of Nueva Pamplona, ​​Bonifacio Antonio Tasco. The first parish priest was Secundino Jácome who administered it until 1893.
