With the name of Huancas it was known from the period of the regional states and tribal organizations from 1000 to 1460 AD. A numerous ethnic group that had its habitat in the territories of the current Provinces of Jauja, Concepción and Huancayo.

It had arisen when the expansionist apogee of the Huari Horizon declined, it was then when more than seventy ayllus united by the belief of a common origin in Huarihuillca saccharin, managed to be politically unified by a caudillo whose name is unknown.

It was first converted into a great nation and then into one of the most powerful kingdoms of the central Andes, like that of the Chancas, the Lupazas, etc.

A warrior people, whose economy was supported by two sectors: agriculture in the valleys and streams, and livestock in the highlands of the puna.

The capital of the Huanca kingdom was the great city of SIQUILLAPUCARA, currently known by the name of Tunanmarca, built on the top of a stone hill, no one has yet measured its area or its altitude, nor has any plan been raised but it is estimated that it is two kilometers long and more than half wide. In the center of the old capital Huanca, there are still the plaza and the temple dedicated to Huallallo Carguncho, the god of the Huanca kingdom.

SIQUILLAPUCARA was the capital of the Huanca kingdom for half a millennium there was the residence of the highest dignitaries and officials of the kingdom until in 1460 Túpac Inca invaded the Huancamayo valley in a plan of conquest, SIQUILLAPUCARA was the last city to surrender to militarism Cuzco. Old documents, still unpublished, tell that the Huancas of the capital of the kingdom were defeated by hunger and thirst, since their supplies were exhausted, once their heroic defenders were defeated they were deported to the northern region of Chachapoyas, men and women left abandoned their lands and dwellings, letting out sharp screams of pain and despair, but the order was carried out, and the old and monumental capital Huanca was left depopulated forever. However, the victor's anger did not remain there. Túpac Yupanqui ordered the demolition of houses, palaces and temples. Everything was demolished except for six or eight rooms that were left intact for the memory of the glorious city of Huanca.

The Province of Chachapoyas was first subdued by the Inca Túpac Yupanqui 60 years before the discovery of America. At the time of the conquest of Chachapoyas by the Inca Tupac Yupanqui, this place was fiefdom of the Huancas and it was called the Province of the Huancas, which after being subject to the Inca for more than 30 years the Huancas rebelled in the time of Huayna Capac forcing for this magnanimous conqueror to come to Pataz where a matron who had served her father (whom they had great veneration for) interceded for the rebels and got the Inca to return to Cuzco, the place of his court.

Nothing is known for certain if since then and for this reason, Levanto became the capital of the province and it was until the moment when the Spanish, in 1538, sent Juan Pérez de Vergara, Alonso Meriadillo and others to conquer this region; establishing his residence in Chachapoyas and naming this capital city of Province, with which he is known until today; Once the Province of Chachapoyas was created, the province of Los Huancas disappeared, the town of Huancas was located on the Shundor hill in the current airport then it was located where it currently is.

Starting from the traditional city of Chachapoyas, Province of Chachapoyas, Amazonas Region, it is 10 km away. The town of HUANCAS which maintains its ancestral customs dedicated to pottery (ceramics), has a beautiful colonial-type church with its image of the Lord of Miracles, unique in its kind in Peru, has two natural viewpoints, the Mirador al Sonche Canyon and Huancaurco viewpoint.

The District of Huancas is located in the Province of Chachapoyas, Amazon Region. It was created by Law No. 12301, on February 5, 1861.

It is located at 2558 meters above sea level, reaching its maximum altitude in the natural viewpoints with 2700 meters above sea level.

The District has the following geographic boundaries:

To the North: the Province of Bongará

To the South: the District of Chachapoyas Province of the same name

To the East: the District of Sónche

To the West: Luya Province

Its territorial demarcation is defined by the Sonche rivers to the east and the Utcubamba river to the west, both of which converge in the north in the place of Tingorbamaba.

Political recognition
