It is located opposite the center of the city's museums, is the creation of Tucuman sculptor Lola Mora. The work, inaugurated in 1903, was carved from Carrara marble and represents the mythical birth of Venus emerging from a sea valve next to a Nereid entourage.
The true meaning of this sculpture is related to the creation of the ideal of feminine beauty. The Fountain of the Nereids was conceived and carved while Dolores Mora de Hernández - full name of the author lived in Rome.

Nowadays the sculpture is considered one of the most important pieces of the city, reason why it was declared National Historical Monument.
