The name of the Monument to the Spaniards is actually the Magna Carta and the four Argentine regions.
The work is 25 meters high and was created in Carrara marble and bronze by the Spanish sculptor Agustín Querol.
The monument was a gift from the Spanish community on the occasion of the centenary commemorations of the May Revolution. It was only opened in 1927 due to some inconveniences that delayed its construction: in March 1916, the transatlantic Prince of Asturias sank in Barcelona, 145 kilometers from Rio de Janeiro, when it hit a rock formation. In this accident, which caused the deaths of more than 450 people, the burden of marble and bronze ornaments that made up the monument's statuary were lost in the depths of the ocean. The following year, replicas were requested of all that was lost in this wreck. Finally, on May 25, 1927, the Count of Amalfi, on behalf of King Alfonso XIII, made the symbolic delivery of the work to President Marcelo Torcuato de Alvear.
